About GALS
What is GALS?
The Girls as Leaders in STEM (GALS) program is committed to fostering young girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and equipping them with the skills they need for the jobs of the future.
We know that women are still significantly underrepresented in the STEM workforce, so together with the generous support of The Invergowrie Foundation, we continue to empower young girls as leaders and entrepreneurs in STEM.
GALS is delivered by multiple universities in rural and regional Victoria. We work with girls in years 5-8 (ages 11-14) and their teachers to solve problems that are important to the girls, their schools, their communities and our world. Our programs develop girls’ skills of design thinking, entrepreneurship, teamwork, leadership and communication.
We are immensely proud to be delivering a program that challenges gender bias and supports the aspirations of young girls pursuing a rewarding career in the STEM industry.
Who are we?
The program was launched by Deakin University in 2019, then Federation University joined the team in 2024. We have hopes of expanding the program to other universities in rural and regional Victoria.
The Deakin GALS team consists of researchers from the School of Education and School of Information Technology and deliver the program in Geelong, Warrnambool and Mildura. Upstart has supported the design and delivery of the GALS program
The Federation University GALS team delivers the program in Ballarat. From 2025, the Ballarat Tech School is supporting delivery of the program.
